Christina Aguilera's story is a Hollywood dream come true. The
daughter of a father in the military and a violinist/pianist mother
who toured Europe with the Youth Symphony Orchestra, this18-year-old
has traveled the world, living for a time in Japan, Florida, Texas
and New Jersey, before settling in Wexford, PA, a suburb of Pittsburgh.
"I wanted to perform as long as I could remember" says
the blonde, blue eyed high school senior. Christina first began
performing in school talent shows. As an eight-year-old she appeared
on the nationally syndicated "Star Search", at age ten
she sang the National Anthem for the Pittsburgh Steelers and Penguins,
and then, at age 12 landed a spot on the "New Mickey Mouse
Club" appearing on the Orlando-based show along with several
other future stars, including Britney Spears, J.C. and Justin
of 'N Sync and the star of "Felicity", Keri Russell.
After two years on the weekly Disney show, Christina traveled
overseas to further hone her musical skills. She recorded a duet,
"All I Wanna Do," with Japanese pop star Keizo Nakanishi,
appeared in the video and toured in Japan. Later that year, the
young show biz veteran almost caused a riot at the Golden Stag
Festival in Transylvania, Romania when she waded into the crowd
of 10,000 while performing her two song set on a bill which included
Sheryl Crow and Diana Ross. On her return to the States in early
1998, Christina was invited to audition to record, "Reflection,"
for the Disney animated film "Mulan." The studio's search
for a powerful voice with a wide vocal range quickly ended. They
needed someone "who could hit a high "E" above
middle "C," according to Christina. At her manager's
request, Christina cut a one take demo on her boombox in her living
room singing to a karaoke tape of Whitney Houston's "I Wanna
Run To You". The demo was FedExed to Disney -- they loved
it -- and within 48 hours, the young girl with the unique mature
voice was in a Los Angeles studio recording "Reflection".
That very same week RCA Records signed her to a record contract.
Mulan premiered in June, 1998 and "Reflection" turned
into a Top 15 A/C single, with Christina performing it live on
"CBS This Morning" and the "Donnie & Marie
Show."
"The song's theme -- the struggle to establish
your identity -- was something I could really relate to as a teenage
girl myself," says Christina. The song also related well
to critics, garnering a Golden Globe Nomination for best original
song in a motion picture. On her debut album for RCA, Christina
continues to define herself and showcase her special voice. From
the sparkling upbeat dance-pop of the first single, "Genie
In A Bottle," to the guitar driven, heartfelt fun of "What
A Girl Wants", to the soulful gospel strains of "So
Emotional" and the truly awe-inspiring ballad, "I Turn
To You", Christina's powerful affecting voice intertwines
the themes of finding your own identity with the uncertainties
of growing up. "I was thrilled to work with so many great
producers on this album" gushes Christina. Recent hitmakers
Carl Sturken & Evan Rogers ['N Sync, Boyzone, Brand New Heavies]
contribute a pair of tracks -- the pop-soul "Love For All
Seasons" and the rousing dance-floor smash "Love Will
Find A Way."
"Genie In A Bottle" was produced by ex-System
member David Frank and Steve Kipner. The uncomplicated, heartfelt
"Blessed" was penned and produced by Travon Potts [co-writer
of Monica's chart topping "Angel of Mine]. Christina is specially
proud of her ballads, including the Matthew Wilder ["No Doubt"]
produced "Reflection" and the spine-tingling Diane Warren
ballad "I Turn To You", produced by Guy Roche [Brandy,
Dru Hill, Aaliya, K-Ci & Jo Jo]. Her soaring uptempos and
thrilling ballads serve as ample proof that Christina is not just
a new kid on the block, but a prime candidate for the Voice of
her generation. This debut album marks another huge step for Christina
down the road of commercial and critical success. With numerous
television appearances to her credit it is not surprising that
Christina has recently been approached by a number of directors
for roles in films going into production this summer. But, this
blond beauty with dazzling blue eyes is going to wait a bit before
pursuing more time in front of the camera.
Christina first appeared on Star Search as a junior
vocalist at the age of 8, and then went on to appear on several
different television and radio shows as well as sing the national
anthem at Pittsburgh Steelers, Penguins, and Pirates games at
the age of 10. She appeared as a mouseketeer on the MMC during
seasons 6 and 7. She then went on to perform the pop version of
"Reflection." from the movie Mulan. She has made a name
for herself overseas by singing a duet with popular Japanese singer
Keizo Nakanishi in 1997. entitled "All I Wanna Do."
With the release of the widely acclaimed "Christina Aguilera"
she has staked a lating claim in the music business.
Christina Maria Aguilera is perhaps the most talented
of the recent Disney mouse ear wearing bunch to hit the music
scene. Her debut album Christina Aguilera rocketed to the #1 position
in its initial week, outshining hip-hop icon Puff Daddy, selling
over 250,000 copies. In listening to her talented range, it sometimes
is difficult to believe this diva was only born on December 18th,
1980.
Christina began performing even as a child. Born in Staten Island,
New Jersey and raised in Wexford, Pennsylvania, Christina was
singing the national anthem at a variety of events in her hometown
area. And at the age of 9, Christina appeared on Star Search,
only to leave empty handed (what little did they know!). A few
years later, Aguilera landed a role on the Mickey Mouse Club.
From there, Christina went on to sing Reflection for the Disney
movie Mulan, which got her a nomination for a Golden Globe award
in 1998. Then, Aguilera began recording her debut album with RCA.
The subsequent release of the single Genie in a Bottle caused
an explosion of interest in the singer, with the single selling
500,000 copies and hitting #1 in the charts. Absent through Christina's
rise to the top was her father Fausto, whom until January of 2000
she hadn't seen for 12 years. Aguilera has made claims that she
is a victim of domestic violence according to recent National
Enquirer reports, a charge which her grandfather angrily denies.
Christina's friend Ashley Hickcox though claims the story is indeed
true.
As far as her dating life, like Britney, little
hard evidence is known. She has admitted to having a crush on
MTV's Carson Daly, as has Britney Spears, so apparently the cold
as ice relationship between the two ex-Mouseketeers has competitveness
both musically and in the sex department. It is unknown whether
Carson has seen either of the divas nude to this point though,
but based on the little hand holding sweet talking happening when
Carson introduced her on MTV's New Year's show after she sang,
it seems quite obvious something was up.. And given the reported
strip show the two attended at an Atlanta club the night before
the Super Bowl, many have speculated they are indeed an item,
though recent reports have Carson currently seeing MTV House of
Style supermodel Tara Reid. Limp Bizkit's Fred Durst seems to
be moving in on Carson's territory though, as earlier this year
Rick Dees reported he visited her on the set of her second video
several times. The most recent dating rumor for Christina has
been Enrique Iglesias, whom the New York Post claims the two were
dancing nasty together late at night in a New York bar. Christina
says of her relationship with the Latin hunk "I do have fun
on the side. Enrique and I have actually maintained friendship
since the Super Bowl" she added "He's just...he's a
wonderful person, really down-to-earth and for as gorgeous as
he is, you wouldn't expect him to be. It's really cool talking
to someone like that." The most recent dating fact has been
she's been dating one of her dancers, Jorge Santos, whom she's
also been living with. A friend confided "Jorge is a good,
down to earth guy and Christina feels like she can be herself
with him instead of trying to live up to something she's not."
Christina is already preparing for a second album and also has
her eyes set on acting, claiming in a recent AOL interview that
she's already been approached with movie offers, but for now is
concentrating on her music career. Besides the second 'regular'
album, she'll be recording a Christmas album to be released later
this year in addition to a Spanish version of her current album.
One aspect of music that Christina isn't appreciating is rapper
Eminem and his depiction of Christina as a blowjob giving hoe.
Christina and the song's targets of her sexual trists, Carson
Daly and Fred Durst, all deny any involvement with each other.
Eminem claims it was an 'eye for an eye' for comments Aguilera
made on MTV's What a Girl Wants, claiming "She went on MTV
talking about my personal business. She heard a rumour that I
was married, and then she started trashing my video talking about,
'Doesn't he have a song about killing his daughter's mother? You
know, I'm so against domestic violence and I always tell my friends
if you're in an abusive relationship."
